How To Start A Career In The Travel Industry

travel industry career

You likely want to start a career in the travel industry, but you don’t know where to start. Or better yet, what are your options in the first place? Wanting to travel the world forever is only something that you can do if you also find a means of making money along the way. Of course, there are some jobs that will require you to stay in a certain location for longer periods of time.

Regardless, this list is for everyone that wants to work in travel, but is not yet sure what exactly he or she should do!

Travel Industry Career Options

Become a tour guide

Becoming a tour guide is just as it sounds, you will be asked to give tours in your specific location. The good news is that you can do this no matter where you are, and you can pick this job up while you are travelling, as well.

You simply need to become familiar with the area that you are in, and you can then contact a tour agency to see if they have any openings. You don’t need any formal qualifications for this role; you simply need to have good communication skills and thus be good at public speaking.

Travel agent

If you become a travel agent, you will be able to help others organise their trips. Not to mention, you will also be going on a few trips yourself in order to better familiarise yourself with that location.

Flight attendant

Working as a flight attendant, you will have discounts on your future flights, and you will also have layovers in the different places that you stop. You will thus have time to explore that area, even for a few days’ time, while your hotel accommodation will all be dealt with and paid for.

Still, don’t underestimate the fact that this job will require you to be standing on your feet, and you are working on a plane, after all.

Start a travel blog and sell customized work on it as well

Stating a travel blog whereby you write and post your photos is another means for you to make money. This particular job is one that will take a while to build up, and it would be best for you to pursue it on a part-time basis, while also finding another source of income until you build it up.

Once you have grown your audience and sufficiently marketed yourself, you can also include Shopify’s ecommerce platforms to sell your travel-related goods or services.

Perhaps you want to sell your travel photography, or you want to sell classes whereby you teach others how to become a successful travel blogger. No matter what it is, incorporating ecommerce will benefit you when it comes to profitability.

Working on a cruise

Choosing to work on a cruise is yet another option that you could take. So long as you don’t glamorise it and realise that it will be a lot of hard work, it will allow you to save a fair bit of money.

Your food and accommodation will all be paid for, but you will be required to work many hours within a day. Still, it could beat working in an office, and if your goal is to save money in order to backpack somewhere, this might be a good option for you.

Think a Travel Industry Career is for you?

There’s a difference between working in the travel industry and going on vacation, where you don’t have tasks that you are responsible for completing. Understand this, and you won’t be disappointed with the job that you end up doing in this industry. Similar to any other career that you would be interested in, it will take some time for you to reach the level of success that you are hoping for. Regardless, if you are interested in obtaining a particular job, you must persevere.
